bold winter coats

Claire’s selection of this season’s statement coats

STAND STUDIO Hunter Jacket

To be honest, this year’s coats are not as exciting & bold as I would have liked, so you’ll see that I’m pulling from The Outnet (aka past season designer coats), along with a few current season finds. With that said, I don’t like to promote over consumption, so check your local vintage / secondhand store or online marketplace to see if there are styles out there that are similar. Furthermore, I always look to find fashion & design picks that will withstand the test of time, not just in construction & materiality, but in style.

STAND STUDIO

Of course my go to brands are Scandinavian. My time spent studying in Denmark and traveling to Norway, Sweden & Finland had a huge impact on my personal style, as well as my design style. The key takeaway was that effortless style is a more enduring style. Purchasing key pieces that will be in your wardrobe for years (if not decades) to come, is at the heart of the Scandinavian & Nordic lifestyles of reducing ones impact on the planet.

Unfortunately, Stand Studio clothes, just like my other fave Swedish brand, Weekday, are only available in the US through retailers like The Outnet and ASOS.

So if you want this Stand Studio Hunter Jacket in Black Teal you’ll need to have it shipped to a friend who lives abroad, and then they can ship it to you in the US. Otherwise, scroll down to check out these past season Stand Studio finds on The Outnet.

ZIMMERMANN Checked Wool-Tweed Coat

ZIMMERMANN

There’s something spot on about the unique designs and choice of colors of these Zimmermann coats from a previous season (found via The Outnet).

I don’t normally go for a traditional plaid, but this Checked Wool-Tweed Coat has the perfect oversized scale with a combination of colors that are easily paired with earth tones, blacks & creams. I can see this coat lasting season after season, pairing well with pants and sweater dresses.

And while, again, I am not a traditionalist at heart there is something unique about the Zimmermann Belted Twill Coat in both Light Brown & Mustard.

While most coats often look best unbelted, which seems impractical for truly cold locales, the Zimmermann Belted Twill Coat seems to shine when belted and fully buttoned at the neck.

For a truly bold look, I would pair with layers of colors, and love that they styled these coats with denim pants - though any pant with a pop of color or pattern would look great too!

BODEN Spot Faux-Fur Midi Coat

BODEN

To my credit, I was able to find some bold winter coats from this season via the 1990’s British clothing brand, Boden - aka a fave brand of the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle.

What I love about this Boden spotted faux-fur coat are the tones of the deep blue base and umber brown dots. It feels playful yet sophisticated if paired with a wide-leg trouser pant, and yet able to be dressed down with a pair of jeans. Again, I find the over scaled nature of the pattern to be the perfect size - giving it a bold look for the fall / winter.

And while you might be thinking these last two coats are the same, they are indeed the reverse of each other. A classic colorblock look - which one you decide, is up to you!

For me, I think I would opt for the Boden Durham Wool Blend Coat as I find warmer tones around my face to be more flattering for my skin tone. Though the Boden Colorblock Midi Coat (also a wool blend) has a very distinct French look to it that seems irresistible to anyone enamored with French style.
