10 of My Favorite Modern Beds
FALL 2018 EDITION
With all the furniture vendors out there, you’d think it would be easy to find a decent amount of unique modern / transitional beds, but I was shocked to find that most retailers offered the same basic shapes in different finishes. So I decided to share my favorites from my hunt to help you style your bedroom with some fresh beds ranging from the uber cheap to collector’s pieces.
I love the IKEA GJÖRA bed because you can customize the headboard and footboard with fabric, macrame, or a light woven rug or tapestry. You can even add cushions hung from straps. The imagination goes wild with the opportunities this simple little bed frame offers, and it’s so affordable.
But just in case you’re not feeling craft-sy, IKEA offers the BJÖRKSNÄS bed with cushions hung from leather straps. This bed nods to bespoke craftsmanship while giving you the clean lines of Scandinavian modern design - a perfect match for any minimalist who loves to read in bed.
I love black, especially when it’s used to express three dimensional form like the Frame canopy bed from CB2. If you have ceilings higher than 9 feet, this bed is a great way to play up the height of your bedroom. Better yet, with its open under frame, it’s perfect for the minimalist who seeks to declutter and live the “kando” life.
Roar + Rabbit has done it again with their gorgeous pleated upholstered bed from West Elm. The pleating is completely unexpected, fresh, and refined. The soft velvet fabric and oyster shell color gives the bed an especially feminine feel while the brass legs provide a nod to the luxe.
At first glance, you might think that this is just a run of the mill wood canopy bed, but what sets the Bali wood canopy bed apart from the rest, is the upholstered headboard. It’s a refreshing modern update to an island staple with it’s simple padded lines, low platform bed, and tall square posts.
The Carved Thalia bed from Anthropologie, while rather simple, is an fun mix of texture and mid-century form. I can easily see one of my favorite maximalist interior designers, Kelly Wearstler, playing up the geometry of the headboard with any of her unique textiles, wallpapers or sculptural case pieces. Feminine yet refined, this bed can work with a variety of styles.
The neo-traditional Leigh bed from Memoky, is a funky yet structured addition that does double duty for those who have a hard time picking art for over their bed. It can be paired with both mid-century pieces or more contemporary ones, offering a slightly more masculine feel than most other beds.
This Leigh bed is quite different from the last, with its ultra high-end feel yet simple minimal form. Any bedroom would be elevated by the addition of this bed, and it’s compliments could range from luxe to coastal rustic.
If you can see past the styling of this neauvo art deco bed, then you’ve already seen its massive potential to add ultra-modern style to your bedroom. Pair this with some of the great modern pieces being made by artisans like those found at The Future Perfect, and you’ll surely look like a seasoned collector with your finger on the pulse.
If my eyes could drool…the well-crafted cane Queen bed from Industry West is a classic with a slick modern spin. A definite collectors piece, it can be styled both traditionally and with more modern pieces. This bed is surely a piece that will impress.
So there you have it! I’d love to know what your favorites are, and if there are any you love that I haven’t shared. Better yet, let me know if you end up getting one of these beauties as your very own!
